De Grendel Celebrates 300yr Heritage
2020 marks De Grendel's 300th anniversary, a heritage that is deeply woven into South African Winemaking lore. The De Graaf family has worked the vineyards in the Tygerberg hills, just outside Cape Town for 4 generations, since 1720. The farm today is a leader in sustainable farming, home to vineyards, a prized Holstein cattle stud, dairy, sheep, horses, fruit, grain, and a conservancy of indigenous renosterveld and game.
Each of the wines released for the 2020 vintage will be marked with the tricentennial seal to mark 300 years of dedicated and sustainable winemaking. Although this is by no means the end of the De Grendel story, 300 years is a celebration and a time for reflection, according to the current owner, the 4th Baronet Sir De Villiers Graaff. As stewards of this unique part of South Africa, they see their responsibility to develop the sustainable enterprise at the core of their community.
