The Epilogue 2018 The Best Reenen Borman's Ever Made
Although the 2018 vintage in South Africa produced some of the best wines in the country, Reenen Borman of Boschkloof feels particularly proud of the wines produced from The Epilogue Vineyard.
Despite 2014, 2015 and 2017, all very good years for South African wines, Reenen claims that his 2018 vintage of The Epilogue is the best he's ever made. Although this might seem like a big call, the responses from critics has backed this up.
The red fruited purity and perfume delivered by the vintage was exactly what Reenen looks for in Syrah, coupled with a Rhône- like character and bright fruit sweetness. The release is in essence a reserve selection of a single vineyard planted with the rare SH99 clone of vines. The harvest was partially de stemmed and aged in a mix of 400L oak barrels and cement.

Boschkloof, Epilogue Syrah 2018
‘One immediately notices a more transparent hue on the medium-bodied 2018 Epilogue. Checking in at 13.5% alcohol and without any noticeable oak, it is certainly leaner and more open than the richer 2017. But its this vivid clarity and purity that is simply exhilarating and mesmerizing, reminding me of the fragrant and profound wines of Côte-Rôtie or Chambolle-Musigny!
The nose is breath-taking, with violets, white pepper, olive brine, lamb-drippings, bramble berries and eau de parfum! The haunting palate is vibrant and pure, with satin-like tannin's encasing delicate sweet fruit, ending in a kick of concentration on the finish. Wow, best Epilogue yet!
Great wines are often immediately delicious from release and this has such perfect balance and seductive fruit now, it’s hard not to drink. It will give any Syrah, no wine, around the world a serious run for its money. Drink now to 2028+.’ 97/100
