This Vineyard May Be An Answer To Sustainable Farming
The Nana Estate Vineyard is located in the Negev Desert, a dusty bowl of land in Isreal's south, the Egyptian border to the west and the Jordanian border to the east. Rainfall averages about 10 or 11 inches a year and temperatures rise to hover around 100 degrees. This is where Isreali winemaker Eran Raz decided to start his own vineyard.
More than a decade later, his estate's vines seem to be unaware of their suffering, the vineyard a green oasis among waves of dry brown dusty surrounds. Today Nana is one of 30 or so farms and vineyards between Beersheba, the main city, and the mountain town of Mitzpe Ramon. And because of this, it could be forging the way for sustainable viticulture in the face of rapid climate change.
