What Really is Orange Wine?
Orange wine is very trendy at the moment, but a lot of people may not actually know what the term “orange wine” means. Orange wine doesn’t refer to what the wine is made of, nor is it a cocktail.
Orange wine is in essence, white wine made like red wine. An oversimplification true, but essentially thats what it is. To clarify, white wine is made in a lot less steps than red wine. Red wine, depending on the grape and laws for the region, is usually macerated on the skins and seeds to deepen the colour and ramp up the tannins.
So thats what they do with orange wine, the white wine grapes are mashed and placed in a large vessel either cement or ceramic, then typically left alone for anything from four days to a year.
